Letters : to James G. Livingston, Lewis, N. Y., 1854 May 2-1855 May 15.

Fourteen ALS written by Livingston to his father, James G. Livingston, during the expedition of the 3rd Artillery to California, describing his departure from New York, the march from Fort Leavenworth through Kansas, Nebraska, and Utah, and encampment in Salt Lake City. Livingston discusses his opinions on Army operations in Indian Territory, relates news of the deaths of Lieutenant John L. Grattan and his command at Fort Laramie, and describes buffalo hunting, the effects of cholera, and other incidents of the march. In letters written from winter encampment in Salt Lake City, Livingston discusses the Army's plans to avenge the death of Captain J. W. Gunnison at the hands of Mormons and American Indians, and he describes his impressions of Salt Lake City, Mormonism, and relations between Mormons and United States soldiers. The letters are bound with typed transcriptions; accompanied by a carte-de-visite photograph in case of Livingston. Laid in is a clipping from Army and Navy Journal, undated, of an obituary for Livingston, written by Colonel Horatio G. Gibson.

John Williams Gunnison, army topographical engineer in charge of surveying a route to the West for the Pacific Railroad, was born in New Hampshire and graduated from West Point in 1835. He served as ordnance officer in the Seminole War in Florida and in making surveys in Georgia. La Rhett Loralzo Livingston was born in 1831 in Essex County, New York, and graduated from West Point in 1853. As a Second Lieutenant with the 3rd Artillery under Colonel Edward Jenner Steptoe, he went to California, marching from Fort Leavenworth to Salt Lake City during 1854-1855, and arriving at Fort Miller, California, in 1855. In the Civil War, he served in the Penninsular, Rappahannock, and Shenandoah campaigns. Colonel Livingston retired in 1895, and he died in Washington in 1903. ...
